WhatsApp and Google have reached an agreement whereby they will be able to store an unlimited number of backup copies of WhatsApp for free and will not have their Google Drive account free or purchased. The changes will be effective from 12 November 2018 and all the backup data of WhatsApp that will be archived from now on will be considered free and unlimited.
The news comes from the WhatsApp FAQ page which says that the backup package will no longer count for available Drive storage space. Google has also spread e-mails to various users about it and has invited users to make manual backup copies of their WhatsApp data before October 30th for the changes to take effect.
WhatsApp has provided users with a way to back up their conversations, photos and videos on Google Drive for a while. The mechanism would require users to have enough space in their Google Drive account to upload all the chats and media on Google's servers. This meant that WhatsApp users were limited to limited storage in Google Drive due to the support quota.
The most recent development means that you can get the latest WhatsApp chats and supports, even if you lose your previous phone or are trying to transfer data to a newer phone. Obviously, WhatsApp backups in Google Drive would require the activation of a Google account on your Android phone where Google Play services are installed. For the backup to be securely loaded, users must ensure that there is sufficient local storage space on the smartphone to create a backup.
To create a backup, you must sign in to WhatsApp> Menu> Settings> Chat> Backup chat and click on "Backup to Google Drive" to manually start the upload process for the first time. This backup will be saved to your Google Drive for now and starting November 12th, the same backup will no longer take up any storage quota on your Google Drive, which will be a ransom for users who have limited or free storage in the your Google account.
It should be noted that not all loaded backup copies will be archived and backups older than one year will be automatically deleted from Drive without warning. Another thing to keep in mind is that once you have backed up your messages and multimedia files to the cloud, they are no longer protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption. So, there's your trap.
